Intelligence Under Control: Professor Kai London on Governing AI in Industrial Operations

Artificial intelligence is entering industrial operations — optimising energy use, predicting failures, and increasingly influencing decisions in data centres and plants. That promise, argues Professor Kai London, a senior technology executive, carries a warning for physical environments. “An ungoverned AI decision here does not just misfire in a spreadsheet. It can move machinery. Control has to come before autonomy.”

London distinguishes AI that recommends from AI that acts on systems. “The closer AI gets to the physical layer, the more rigorous its governance must be,” he says.
A control architecture
His approach treats governance as connected layers: a charter of what AI may do; named human ownership of every consequential model; documentation and data lineage; testing for accuracy and robustness; resilience so failures are contained; and continuous monitoring. “Together they let a board deploy AI where mistakes have physical consequences,” he says.
Humans in the loop
For safety-critical processes, London insists on oversight and hard limits. “An AI agent acting on industrial systems needs an identity, a boundary and a kill-switch,” he says.
Governance as enabler
“You cannot responsibly put an ungoverned model near critical infrastructure,” London says, “but a well-governed one you can — and that is where the gains live.” Emerging AI regulation and management standards increasingly demand this discipline.
